Discover the Unique Sound of Knife and Needles: A Band Born between the Labour Ward and the Operating Room
Bonheiden, Belgium – Knife and Needles, an eclectic indie and folk rock band with bluesy and Latin influences, is thrilled to announce their emergence onto the music scene. Founded in 2023, the band is composed of four medical professionals whose shared passion for music has led to the creation of a unique and captivating sound.
Herbert Cooreman, a lifelong musical centipede, began jamming with Manu Vandenhauwaert, a chronic guitar addict and singer. Both work as anesthesiologists and discovered their mutual love for music during perioperative banter. They soon learned that Jan Baekelandt, a gynaecologic surgeon they regularly work with, had recently discovered his new passion for the bass guitar. The trio, who had previously been triathlon buddies, had been unaware of each other’s musical talents until then.
Their journey began with casual jam sessions, which quickly led to an invitation to perform at a gig. Realizing they needed a drummer, they hesitated to approach Jelle Dewulf, an ICU nurse renowned for his exception drumming skills. However, with their first gig approaching, they gathered their courage and invited Jelle to join them. The four musicians instantly clicked, and the band was born.
Herbert jokingly named the band ‘Knife and Needles’ for their first performance, a nod to their professions: one surgeon (Knife) and two anesthesiologists and an ICU nurse (Needles). The name stuck, and the band has embraced it ever since.
Knife and Needles began holding weekly jam sessions in Herbert’s private studio, where they started creating their own songs and developing their distinctive style. Herbert’s melodic distinct baritone voice complements the band’s signature blend of indie and folk rock, with bluesy and Latin touches inspired by artists like Bear’s Den, JJ Cale, and John Mayer.
